High Drama at Vuelta a España as Crashes and Injuries Plague the Race

Peter Sagan Withdraws, Vingegaard Hospitalized

The Vuelta a España has been marred by a series of high-profile crashes and injuries, including the withdrawal of two-time defending Tour de France champion Peter Sagan and the hospitalization of Jonas Vingegaard.

Sagan's Collision and Withdrawal

Sagan was accidentally hit by a neutral service bike during stage eight of the race and was forced to abandon the Vuelta. The Slovakian rider was later fined by the UCI for his reaction to the incident.

Vingegaard's Hospitalization

Vingegaard, who won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023, was among several riders injured in a harrowing crash at the Basque Country Vuelta. The Danish rider was taken to hospital in an ambulance and later diagnosed with a broken collarbone and several broken ribs.

Other Notable Crashes

Several other riders have also suffered injuries in crashes at the Vuelta a España, including:

  • Theo Bos (Cervélo) crashed into a parked motorcycle and was released from hospital.
  • Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) crashed into a soigneur after the finish line.
  • Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) crashed on stage 7 and lost time in the finale.
  • Jay Vine (Team Emirates UAE) fell victim to injury in Stage 6.

Safety Concerns Raised

The spate of crashes has raised concerns about the safety of the race, with riders expressing their unhappiness with the conditions.

The UCI has stated that it is reviewing the safety of the Vuelta a España and will take appropriate action to ensure the well-being of the riders.
